Here is an article from Fragyou.com about Laser gaming mice.
http://www.fragyou.net/?page_id=242 Things you need to remember about fragyou.com
1. this is the unofficial SteelSeries Blog.
2. The aritcle might be biased towards a new mouse they developed. So please be sure to read through that and get the meat of the article.
My personal Take on the Article sent to our contact at steel series after he asked for it.
<Copied from my email sent to our SS Contact>
"Honestly a mouse to me is much more then gaming precision and reviews. Mice have to fit my hand (I have large Hands), be able to not only perform well in games but also in Adobe Photoshop and other Picture or Video editing programs. This is why you don’t see me having a Razor or any other game mouse only manufactures mouse. I have been a long time Logitech user and still am to this day. I have a G5 Laser mouse due to the change on the fly CPI (as you call it) which is great when doing detail work in Photoshop for me, and I prefer a heavy mouse when doing that work.
While I do agree an un-weighted mouse is better for gaming, I am not what you call hard core and I don’t change any settings or tweak anything for games over my primary applications. Hell I bought a G15 Keyboard to use the macro keys in Photoshop and After Effects not games (all though I have a few for UT2004 set from back in the day). One thing you talked about in the article is the issues with early Laser mice and your pads. I have a First Gen G5 Laser with no firmware update and have had Zero issues with my Steel 4D Pad and it. I had more issues with tracking on my 4D with my old MX510 and had to revert back to my Func 1080.
I have to agree with someone else who posted a comment that for a company that has been doing surfaces and headsets and has only put 15 months of R&D into a mouse really has no room to compare against MS, Logitech, and Razor. I Personally would still put My G5 over any other mouse except maybe an original Sniper Boomslang or MS Intellimouse 3. I hope you guys can make me eat my words on that one…"
