This is from the perspective of a competitive out of towner.
For me to make a trip over an hour to a LAN, I need 1 of 2 things. 1 a friendly and fun atmosphere, 2 tournaments worth the trip.
WLP generally has number 1 covered. Unfortunately, that reason alone can only grab my (and others in my position) attention and attendance, if there isn't anything better competing with that date.
Reason 2 can be a bigger or lesser factor, depending on my financial situation. But generally, I like to make a trip to a LAN, and come out in the black. This means tournaments need to not only attract my attention, but must also compensate me for my efforts. I'm not wanting $1000 pots here, but I spend $50 minimum for travel costs.
Now, all of this is obviously coming from a tourny focused/out of town individual. If I lived in Wichita, I would definitely have a different view. In running a LAN, you kinda have to choose if you want a more serious (tournament) event, or a more relaxed (free play) LAN. No reason that one is better than the other, just unfortunate that its extremely difficult to pull them both off.
Thoughts for tournaments:
WLP always does a good job picking enjoyable games, and good mods/modes. With the fall rush of games, every LAN is in the middle of shuffling in some new, while keeping some of the nostalgia of the old.
Keep a variety of tournaments, and seriousness-as in, keep some open tournaments, but have some higher buy in ones as well. This could keep the general population interacting, and promote higher competition at the same time. Heck, you can run an open tournament and a buy-in with the same game, if people are just going nuts for it.
Buy-ins. I believe you guys still do a buy-in for a few of your games, perhaps not. Either way, a $5 buy in per person seems to be what I usually see. I'm an optimist and will generally pay $10 for area LANs for about any game...$20 or more if its one of my games.
Again, this is purely a competitive out of towner. I would love to make it to more LANs in the Midwest, but its hard to justify some without good tournament play.
